Every Friday from 11AM-11:30AM, The Library hosts Family Story Time, and all ages event with stories for readers of all level and ability, from babies to 7 year olds. If you have seen Christopher Nolan’s movie The Odyssey, you may be wondering how close it is to the ancient Greek poem. Professor Susanna Lennox (UBC 2007-2021) will offer analysis of the Homeric poem and the movie. She will also introduce you to poems, novels and music inspired by the Odyssey, including works by Margaret Atwood and Madeline Miller. Her focus will be the encounters between Odysseus and the female–princesses, sorceresses, nymphs and goddesses–as he makes his long journey home to his wife Penelope after the Trojan War. Susanna will show how this central story in Greek mythology continues to influence literature and music in the 20th and 21st centuries.

Our Favourite Poems This month we depart from our usual format.  No featured poet.  No open mic where people read their own poems.  Instead, an opportunity for everyone to bring and share poems they love written by somebody else.  Everyone is encouraged to bring a favourite poem to read aloud to the group.  Or to bring two or three.  We will take turns reading what we bring.  Please keep poems to three minutes or less so we have the chance to hear a wide range of poems.   Our regular format returns next month.  On Thursday, November 5, Ian Thomas will be our featured poet, and we will have the usual ten slots for the open mic.
