Artcraft Showcase Exhibition ― Ordinary Exaltation
Ordinary Exaltation brings together the work of Cheryl Long and Laura Keil, two Salt Spring Island artists whose practices are rooted in close attention, material exploration, and a reverence for the natural world. In her recent body of oil paintings, Cheryl Long explores the mystery, spirit, and living presence she senses in nature. Moving between landscape and dreamscape, her work reaches beyond physical appearances to consider the energetic, emotional, and spiritual dimensions of the world around her. Inspired in part by the early 20th-century Transcendentalist painters, Cheryl uses colour, form, light, and intuitive imagery to express a deeper relationship with the land and the unseen forces that move through it. Laura Keil’s ceramic practice is equally grounded in attention and relationship. Working with coils, slabs, and pinching, Laura builds her vessels slowly and intuitively, allowing each form to develop its own presence. Her surfaces further deepen this sense of transformation, with some pieces shaped by the ash, flame, and atmosphere of the wood kiln, and others finished with glazes that evoke the patina of weathered bronze or copper.
