The Island Textile Artists will present a collection of new work with a variety of themes as well as some re-imagined works from the past. What if the mental health symptoms we face are signals that can help us see and solve actual causes? Nationally, about 1 in 5 (or over seven million) people in Canada experience a mental illness or significant mental health issue annually. By age 40, about half of the Canadian population will have or have had a mental illness. Dr. Joanna Cheek sees mental health struggles as symptoms of the imbalances in our wider systems, and works to decrease the stigma that is too often misplaced on the individuals who suffer rather than the ailing society around them. In addition to caring for individuals, she hopes to heal the harmful dynamics of domination, division, and indifference within our collective systems, teaching that collective-care is self-care. Perhaps the youngest audience ArtSpring has ever catered for? Foolish Operations’ Baby Space Opera is designed especially for babies aged 6-24 months and their adults, transforming theatre into a playful and sensory-rich adventure. Young audiences are invited to explore a colourful universe filled with music, movement, sound and imagination, in an environment created specifically for them—whilst also welcoming us all to a collective meditation on our place in the infinite universe. We are truly excited by this performance and immersive week, after our artistic programmer met Nicole Rose Bond during a residency here on Salt Spring and knew he wanted to see her perform on the ArtSpring stage. Dancestors is a ritual of celebration, grief, acknowledgement, and hope. A mid-career modern dance artist, Nicole will perform a solo show based on her friendships with four great Canadian choreographers: Susan Cash, Danny Grossman, Patricia Beatty, and Peggy Baker. Reciting a letter of remembrance and gratitude, then performing a solo from each, Nicole pays respect to the guidance, generosity, and wisdom of those who came before her, and on whose shoulders she graciously stands. The final work is performed with live piano by Youngsin Choi, supporting Nicole in remembering what was, and joining her in looking forward to what is to come.
